About the Oil Painting Classes

  • AGE: We suggest this course for ages 12 and above.
  • LEVEL: Perfect for all skill levels. The instructor will always be there to guide and support you.
  • MATERIALS: We provide only professional materials, all of which are included in the course fee. The canvas is not included in the course fee; it must be purchased at the studio or you can bring your own.
  • SMALL GROUPS: Group sizes are limited to 10 participants, though we typically aim for groups of 8.
  • COURSE DURATION: 10 months (9 lessons / 40 sessions of 2 hours each, once a week).
  • SCHEDULE: Classes are held once a week. You can reschedule up to two classes per month at no extra cost.
 

This is an intensive oil painting course covering important topics such as composition, style, the nuances of working with oil paints, and the basics of color theory. Each lesson is dedicated to a specific theme that incorporates all these aspects. Whether you are a beginner or have some painting experience, this course is perfect for you. Let’s take a closer look at what you will learn:
Composition. In this course, you will thoroughly explore the four fundamental principles of composition and how to apply them in painting. Some of these principles will be directly applied to your work under the guidance of the instructor.
Color Theory. You will learn the basic principles of color theory, including tonal value, color harmonies, color balance, and how to apply them in practice.
Materials. You will work not only with oil paints but also get acquainted with techniques involving a palette knife, bristle brushes (in the style of Van Gogh), and ways to mix with other materials such as fluorescent acrylic.
Construction. You will study the basic principles of construction, such as aerial perspective and the rule of thirds. Our teacher will explain in detail how these concepts work and how to use them in your painting.
Remember, the teacher will always be there to assist you. We are passionate about our work and strive to explain it in a way that’s understandable to everyone, even absolute beginners.

Oil Painting Course Program

LESSON #1 (4 SESSIONS OF 2 HRS each) Painting of Your Choice. Glazing Technique.

This is an introductory lesson. In this session, you’ll have the opportunity to replicate one of the paintings available in the studio (over 50 options). The genre is up to you, but the technique will be the same for everyone. Each student selects a subject that resonates with them.
What exactly will we be learning?
Materials:
Oil paints, brushes, a canvas. Topics we’ll cover: How to care for brushes, types of solvents, types of canvases, types of brushes.
Composition. Topics we’ll cover: The elements of a painting, the compositional center, the horizon line, and underpainting.
Stylistics. The style, like the genre, can be anything, but we will focus on the glazing method. This is one of the fundamental techniques in painting.
One lesson will consist of 4 sessions, meaning it will take 8 hours to complete your painting!

LESSON #2 (4 SESSIONS OF 2 HRS each) Impasto Painting. Palette Knife Technique.

In this lesson, we will delve into the technique of working with a palette knife. You will choose any photo from the available impasto paintings (over 50 options) and attempt to recreate it on your own canvas. The teacher will be by your side, assisting you every step of the way.
Materials: palette knife, texture paste, oil paints, canvas. Topics we’ll cover: What types of palette knives are there, and which one should you use for different tasks?
What types of texture pastes are available, and how do you choose the right one for your project?
Construction: Methods for transferring images onto the canvas. Transferring images using the grid method.
Color Theory: What is the Itten color wheel? Fundamental properties of colors. How to mix colors. Primary and secondary colors.
One lesson will consist of 4 sessions, which means it will take 8 hours to complete your painting!

LESSON #3 (6 sessions of 2 hrs each) Seascape. Sunset. Aerial Perspective.

In this lesson, we will learn to paint from a photograph rather than from a painting. This is more challenging, as you’ll need to apply the stylistic techniques you’ve learned on your own. You’ll choose one of the photographs (over 50 available) from our studio collection. This will be your own original work!
Construction. Topics we’ll cover: What is aerial perspective? How to depict reflections around us? How to paint clouds?
Composition. Topics we’ll cover: What is the Golden Ratio? What is the Golden Spiral? What is the Fibonacci Spiral? What is the Rule of Thirds?
Color Theory: Warm and cool tones in a painting, contrast in warmth, color palette.
One lesson consists of 6 sessions, meaning it will take 12 hours to complete your painting!

LESSON #4 (6 sessions of 2 hrs each) Painting a Flower. Central Composition.

In this lesson, we will paint a flower bud in a macro format. You’ll work from a photograph and can choose any flower from those available in the studio. The main goal of this lesson is to understand how tonal contrast works. First, you’ll paint the bud in black and white, and then you’ll select the colors for it without referring back to the photograph!
Materials: Charcoal, acrylic, varnish, oil paint, canvas.
Topics we’ll cover: What is charcoal? What types of varnishes are there for paintings, and when should you use them?
Composition: The 4 fundamental principles of composition. Central composition.
Color Theory: Tonal contrast.
The lesson is made up of 6 sessions, requiring a total of 12 hours to complete your painting!

LESSON #5 (4 SESSIONS OF 2 HRS). Rainy city. Symmetrical Composition.

In this lesson, you’ll paint your favorite city in the rain! You can choose the city from the photographs available in the studio. You’ll learn how to convey the wet effect on canvas and how to create a glowing effect. The teacher will be there to guide you through each step individually.
Composition: What is a symmetrical type of composition? V-shaped composition. Linear emphasis in composition.
Construction: The principles of linear perspective.
Color Theory: Color balance. The 60-30-10 rule. Saturation contrast.
One lesson consists of 4 sessions, meaning it will take 8 hours to complete your painting!

LESSON #6 (2 SESSIONS OF 2 HRS). Abstraction. Psychology of color.

Abstraction is an intuitive genre of painting, but it also has specific types and stylistic techniques. In this lesson, you’ll learn the basic principles of creating abstractions and explore techniques that will make your painting more interesting and dynamic.
Composition: Mosaic balance. Stable and unstable composition. Dominance in composition. The law of subordination.
Construction: Variations of abstractions based on the works of famous artists. Technical techniques (scratches, drips, drops, splashes, aging effects).
Color Theory: Color contrast. The psychology of color.
The lesson is split into 2 sessions, so it will take 4 hours to finish your painting!

 
LESSON #7 (4 SESSIONS OF 2 HRS). Landscape in the Style of Claude Monet

Impressionism is one of the most beloved styles of modern times, with Claude Monet being a pioneer of this movement. In this lesson, we will explore the key characteristics of the style, the technique of applying brushstrokes, and mixing colors directly on the canvas. In this style, capturing the moment is crucial, and many elements are painted in a single session.
Composition: In this lesson, we will study what rhythm in painting is. We will apply regular rhythm in our work.
Color Theory: Saturation contrast
One lesson is made up of 4 sessions, so you’ll need 8 hours to finish your painting!

LESSON #8 (4 SESSIONS OF 2 HRS). Painting in the Style of Van Gogh

In this lesson, we will explore Post-Impressionism. This is a fascinating painting style that has left a significant mark on art history and continues to captivate modern audiences. The key figure of this style was Van Gogh, and in this session, we will be recreating one of his paintings of your choice (each student will select one individually).
Materials: Oil paint, canvas, bristle brushes.
Composition: What is asymmetrical composition and how to apply it? How to balance a composition using small subordinate elements? What is flowing rhythm, as seen in Van Gogh’s paintings?
Color Theory: Harmony through contrast of complementary colors.
To cover this topic, we will need 4 sessions of 2 hours each.

LESSON #9 (6 SESSIONS OF 2 HRS). Underwater World. Diagonal Composition.

In this lesson, we will explore how to paint transparent objects using examples like jellyfish and bubbles. We will also examine the technique of mixing materials, such as acrylic and oil paints. You will have the opportunity to choose a painting from the selection available in the studio (over 50 options).
Composition: What is diagonal composition? How to create an asymmetrical composition? Static and dynamic composition.
Color Theory: Types of color harmonies.
Materials: Fluorescent acrylic, oil paint, brushes.
We will need 6 sessions and 12 hours to complete this lesson.

The price already includes all the necessary professional materials. You will only need to purchase the canvas (which can be done in our studio during class). It is not included initially because each student selects a picture they like, and the size of the future painting may vary from that of other students’ paintings.

You can request a refund within 14 days after purchasing the course, provided you haven’t attended more than 1- 2 sessions.
If you attended 1 or 2 sessions during this 14-day period, we will refund your subscription fee minus the cost of these 1-2 sessions.
For example, if you purchased a 1-month subscription for $200 but only attended 1 class, we will refund you $140 by deducting $60 (the cost of the lesson you attended) from the initial $200.
